The Walk:
The Matahuru Valley Walk offers two scenic routes for all levels of walkers. The Full Day Walk is a 5-6 hour journey covering 12km with varied terrain, including stunning views of North Waikato, the beautiful Matahuru Stream, and several pockets of native podocarp forest. You’ll also encounter examples of riparian plantings, showcasing the region’s conservation efforts.
The Half Day Walk is a more leisurely 2-3 hour walk, covering 8km of mainly farm tracks. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Waikato and Hauraki regions, with glimpses of Mt. Ruapehu and the Coromandel Peninsula. This walk reaches the highest point at 535m and also passes through the QEII Matahuru Reserve, offering a peaceful and immersive nature experience.
Full Day Walk:

Waikohu and Mickleson Farms
12km | Moderate
This stunning full-day walk spans 12 kilometers through the picturesque Waikohu and Mickleson Farms, offering a diverse range of landscapes and a moderate level of challenge. Expect a variety of terrain and elevations as you make your way through the beautiful countryside.
As you walk, you’ll be treated to the serene beauty of the Matahuru Stream, with its peaceful waters and surrounding lush vegetation. The views over North Waikato are truly breathtaking, providing plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the sweeping vistas. Along the way, you’ll encounter several pockets of lush podocarp forest, where you can appreciate the native flora and the rich biodiversity of the area.
Additionally, the walk showcases several examples of riparian plantings—initiatives aimed at improving water quality and supporting local wildlife. These plantings offer a glimpse into the region’s conservation efforts and provide a vital habitat for native species.
Half Day Walk:
2-3 Hour Walk
Tui Ridge Farm

This 2-3 hour half-day walk covers 8 kilometers of scenic terrain on Tui Ridge Farm, offering a moderate challenge for walkers of all levels. The route provides stunning panoramic views across the Waikato and Hauraki regions, with the towering Mt. Ruapehu visible on clear days, and the picturesque Coromandel Peninsula to the north. It’s an ideal opportunity to take in the natural beauty of the area while enjoying the fresh country air.
The walk reaches the highest point of both tracks at 535 meters, rewarding you with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, you’ll be able to appreciate the full expanse of the region, from the rolling hills to the distant mountain ranges.
The trail also passes through the QEII on Tui Ridge, a protected area dedicated to preserving native ecosystems. As you walk, you’ll encounter a variety of local flora and fauna, with the reserve playing a key role in conservation efforts for the region.

Three working sheep and beef farmers in North Waikato have recently diversified to offer a fully catered private walk. It gives tourists and walkers an authentic ‘agritourism’ experience. They’ve planted 75k natives over the past 4 years and it’s an example of using farmland in a sustainable, environmental way.
